Character Creation
Unless you’re the Referee, the first thing you need to do when playing Clash! is to create your character.
This section provides a step-by-step guide for creating a character using the Clash! Rules.
Step 1: Choose a concept
You should decide what kind of character you want to make. You are free to choose any kind of character you like, but a pacifist probably won’t get far in the world of Clash!, so it would be a good idea to come up with a reason for fighting. You should also think about what style of fighting you would like to use. Clash! supports a variety of styles, from agile martial artists to wildly swinging brutes.
Step 2: Starting Stats
All player characters start the same way.
- Level: 1
- Stamina die: 1d6
- Health: 10
- Special Ability Slots: 2
- Access to all actions with the ‘Basic’ trait.
Step 3: Choose Initial Skill Tree
Character building in Clash! is achieved by advancing through skill trees; a collection of actions, special abilities, and character improvements grouped by a theme. At character creation, choose one skill tree, and unlock the first entry in that tree.
Character Progression
Character progression is determined by the Referee, and depends on how often they want players to get stronger. Examples of when to level characters up include:
- After an encounter
- After a session
- After a story milestone
- After an impressive feat
Every time a character earns a level, they gain the ability to unlock one new entry in any skill tree. (assuming they have unlocked any prerequisites). You do not have to stick with your initial skill tree.
